About
about

The Malawi Chamber of Mines is a pivotal organization in Malawi's mining industry, which includes a diverse range of minerals, prominently fuel minerals like uranium. The Chamber, comprising companies and individuals in the minerals industry, focuses on the sustainable exploitation of these resources for the benefit of its members, the government, and local communities.

Historically, Malawi's mining industry has contributed significantly to the country's economy. Notably, uranium production has been a major contributor, with Malawi's production accounting for 1% of the global output. Since 2009, the Kayelekera uranium mine in the northern region has notably increased Malawi's GDP contribution from mining from 1% to 10% as of 2013. However, the sector's contribution faced a decline due to the suspension of production at the Kayelekera Mine. Other mining activities include the extraction of coal, limestone for cement, and a variety of gemstones such as agate, aquamarine, and amethyst.

The Malawi Chamber of Mines has demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters, including hurricanes. These events affected mining operations and community welfare. However, the Chamber's members made significant humanitarian contributions in affected areas, strengthening community relationships.

Additionally, the Chamber played a role in the government's legislative changes, such as the replacement of the Mines and Minerals Act 2018 with the Mines and Minerals Act 2023. This new Act established the Mines and Minerals Regulatory Authority and shifted key functions like licensing and inspection from the Departments of Mines and Geological Survey to this Authority.

The Malawi Chamber of Mines has also been involved in critical mineral exploration, including uranium, niobium, and rare earths, essential for energy transition and reducing carbon emissions. Despite challenges, the Chamber's membership has grown, reflecting a resilient and evolving sector.

In summary, the Malawi Chamber of Mines, with its focus on sustainable mining, regulatory compliance, and social and environmental accountability, stands as a significant player in Malawi's economic development and industrialization. It reflects a history of adapting to challenges while exploring new opportunities in the mining sector.
